Beware of Scam! - The Trust Account Hotline recently learned of a scam where a scammer contacts a lawyer with an employment severance issue. The scammer has created a domain name that is nearly identical to a legitimate company (a very large health care provider) and has impersonated the company's Human Resources Director and Chief Financial Officer by setting up email accounts using the same names of the HR Director and CFO at the legitimate company. The scammer then appears to send the lawyer "real" money using a cashier's check drawn on a U.S. bank before asking the lawyer to wire or mail part of that money to the scammer or to a third party. Here are some red flags:
- You are asked to pay money out of your account
- You are asked to act quickly
- You have never met the "client"
- You do very little work before there is money or a settlement for you to deposit in your IOLTA
Don't be fooled, even if the purported company has an authentic domain name and website. If you are not sure, contact the Trust Account Hotline at: (602) 340 - 7305. All calls are confidential.
