Hon. John R. Sticht Disability Achievement Award

Established in 2006 (amended language in 2015), the Hon. John R. Sticht Disability Achievement Award is  presented by the Board of Governors to recognize either a person(s) in the legal profession or a group, organization or employer, who or which furthers the goals of access to justice and the full participation for people with disabilities in the legal profession and justice system or a person(s) with disability who has demonstrated exceptional depth of inner strength, courage in the face of adversity, and tenacity of purpose.

2018 Recipient

Lawrence O. Anderson

Hon. Lawrence O. Anderson was born and raised in Arizona except for time he spent in San Francisco for college. He’s the oldest of five children, born to the late Jack M. Anderson, a prominent Phoenix trial lawyer and co-founder of the Phoenix law firm of O’Connor, Cavanagh, Anderson et al., and the late Viola Ohaco Anderson, a Flagstaff native and daughter of Michel Ohaco, one of Arizona’s Basque sheep pioneers.

Judge Anderson was admitted to the State Bar of Arizona in April, 1975. From 1975 to 1990, he was active in defending insureds of casualty insurance companies and representing injured Plaintiffs or their families in personal injury or wrongful death cases.  His extensive trial experience would qualify him as a certified specialist in personal injury and wrongful death litigation. To name a couple accomplishments, he was a founding member of the Maricopa County Superior Court’s Americans With Disabilities Act (“ADA”) Court Committee and was named the National wheelchair weightlifting champion in 1974.

Judge Anderson has lived his life, subsequent to a spinal cord injury in 1969, destroying disability stereotypes by leading an active lifestyle in a wheelchair; demonstrating it’s a person’s abilities that really matter; and, when necessary, using the legal process to eliminate unfair discrimination based on disability.
