Award of Special Merit

Established in 1988, the Award of Special Merit is  presented by the Board of Governors to members of the State Bar of Arizona who have made significant contributions to the furtherance of public understanding of the legal system, the administration of justice,  and confidence in the legal profession.   

2018 Recipient  

Hon. Michael P. Pollard

Hon. Michael Phillips Pollard graduated from the University of Arizona, College of Law in May 1972 and was admitted to the Arizona State Bar in September 1972. He's been a private practitioner, Pima County Public Defender, Pima County Attorney and Tucson City Prosecutor. He became a Tucson City Court Magistrate in December 1994. From 1997 to 2000, he served on the Arizona Supreme Court Committee on the Impact of Domestic Violence in the Courts. From 1997 to June 2018, he served as the chair of the Arizona Supreme Court’s Court Automation Coordinating Committee. In December 2004, with attorney James Richardson, he established the Tucson City Homeless Court. He's a Vietnam Marine Veteran and in 2009, with a team of City personnel, Veterans Administration staff and local resources, developed the Tucson Veterans Treatment Court to assist veterans charged with misdemeanor offenses. Expanded to the Regional Municipalities Veterans Treatment Court, this comprehensive program works with Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita and South Tucson to coordinate multiple treatment agencies and provide mentors for the Veterans.

He's received awards in categories such as Lawyers Making a Difference, LULAC Community Service, Induction into Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame, Award of Appreciation and Recognition, Tucson City Mayor and Council, and Arizona Judge of the Year.
