The Michael J. Brophy Distinguished Service Award ("Brophy Award") is awarded at the discretion of the Council to a member of the State Bar of Arizona’s Environmental and Natural Resource Law Section ("ENRLS") who exemplifies the qualities of commitment of service to the environmental and natural resources law profession and the community that was valued by Mike Brophy, a distinguished lawyer, family man and friend.

The Brophy Award is presented to a lawyer who, like Mike did, approaches personal and professional demands with honesty, integrity, courage, grace, dignity, respect, wit, and compassion --- taking the long view, and keeping in mind the community of which we are all a part.  The Brophy Award was created to recognize a lawyer who thinks creatively about clients' problems and solutions, teaches and mentors less experienced lawyers, and strives to balance the demands of their professional and personal life.

Past Brophy Award recipients include: Roger Ferland, Patrick Cunningham, Jim Derouin, Byron Lewis, and Lucas

Any active ENRLS member, including any ENRLS Executive Council Member, may nominate an individual for the Brophy Award.  To nominate an individual, please provide the following information by December 1, 2015:

  • Nomination Form
  • Curriculum vitae for the nominee
  • Two letters of recommendations from other individuals
addressing the nominee's qualifications for the Brophy Award

The list of nominees for the Brophy Award will be provided to the ENRLS membership via a discussion posting to the State Bar of Arizona's Online Community Environmental & Natural Resources Law community.  ENRLS members are encouraged to provide information to the ENRLS Executive Council regarding the nominees by contacting Maribeth Klein at mmklein@swlaw.com or 602.382.6295.

The ENRLS Executive Council will vote to select the Brophy Award recipient on January 14, 2016, at the regularly scheduled meeting of the ENRLS Executive Council.  The Brophy Award will be presented to the selected individual at the ENRLS Annual Banquet in the spring of 2016.
