Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Council
The Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Council of the State Bar of Arizona is charged with providing policy recommendations, advice, and information to the Board of Governors about: advancing equitable treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons within the legal community and judiciary; promoting equality in treatment of all participants by the legal profession and judiciary regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression; raising awareness and assisting in education of members of the legal profession and judiciary regarding issues of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression; and other related issues.
On February 14, 1997, the State Bar of Arizona's Board of Governors established the Gay & Lesbian Task Force to conduct a study of the State Bar of Arizona and the Justice System to determine whether there is discrimination against gays and lesbians and, if so, to make suggestions for remedies. The Task Force completed its survey of judges, attorneys, professors, law students and members of the gay and lesbian community. A report including recommendations was written to the Board of Governors.
