From Judge Murgia:
I am again hosting a "Kids to Court" event in conjunction with ASU Sandra Day O'Connor Law School and local school districts. The program is titled "CourtWorks." This is the eighth year of our program. I expect 300 children, plus teachers and chaperones, to attend, for a total of approximately 350 participants.
This is a multi-partnership program designed to introduce eighth graders to the judicial system and create a context for a professional career in law. It also serves to bring the community to the courthouse, which I feel is vital role of the District Court and the Circuit Court.
Date: Friday, October 26, 2012
Time: 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The children will participate in a mock trial in the morning from 9:00 to approximately 10:20 a.m. I am hoping to have three attorney volunteers in each of the 10 courtrooms reserved for the mock trials; therefore, I am asking for as many attorney volunteers from your office or organization as possible to offer their time that morning to sit beside a "student attorney" or "student judge" and help them with their role during the mock trial.
There will be a luncheon meeting of all attorney volunteers on Thursday, October 4, 2012, from noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Sandra Day O'Connor U.S. Courthouse, 401 W. Washington Street, Jury Assembly Room, to provide the volunteers with an overview of the event and details of their role.
You do not have to attend the lunch to volunteer. It provides for an opportunity to review the program materials, and mostly to thank the lawyer and court volunteers who assist us with this worthwhile event.
If you or someone you designate could get the word out to your office, I would greatly appreciate it. Please send to me and Mary Benchimol, via email at firstname.lastname@example.org the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of your volunteers for this program.
Additionally, I ask you to please RSVP for the volunteer luncheon no later than Friday, September 21, 2012.
Thank you very much for your support and assistance in the past years and for our event October 26, 2012.
Judge Mary H. Murguia
