The annual Law Day events took place in Prescott Valley on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the Prescott Valley Public Library, in Prescott on Friday, May 4, 2012, at the Prescott Public Library, and on Monday, May 7, 2012, in Cottonwood at the Yavapai County Building.
Law Day is an event in which local volunteer lawyers provide free legal advice to local residents as a way to improve your access to justice and to show that lawyers are willing to help others in need without always being paid.
President Eisenhower proclaimed May 1 (Previously known as "May Day" or "International Workers' Day") would be known as "Law Day, U.S.A." in 1958. On April 7, 1961, 36 United States Code § 113 was enacted, stating:
Law Day, U.S.A., is a special day of celebration by the people of the United States-
(1) in appreciation of their liberties and the reaffirmation of their loyalty to the United States and of their rededication to the ideals of equality and justice under law in their relations with each other and with other countries; and
(2) for the cultivation of the respect for law that is so vital to the democratic way of life.
Community Legal Services and the Yavapai County Bar Association support Law Day to show our appreciation for the people of the surrounding community and our thanks for all the freedom, equality and justice we share under the law in the U.S. We hope to encourage increased respect among the public for the many benefits of law that we all enjoy.
Tina Roach of Community Legal Services and Yavapai County Bar Association Coordinator Chris Jensen of Jensen Law Firm, P.C., worked together again to organize this annual Law Day Event to serve the public free of charge with legal guidance and advice.
