State Bar of Arizona Membership Reaches 22,000
PHOENIX - May 8, 2012 - Membership in the State Bar of Arizona has reached 22,000 for the first time. Numbers released by the Bar show that in April its total membership reached 22,005.
Established by the legislature in 1933, growth in the Bar has steadily grown over the years. In 1970, the Bar had 3,000 members. By 1991 that number had more than doubled to 7,100. According to the Phoenix Business Journal's 2012 Book of Lists, the Bar is the largest professional association in the state of Arizona.
By Court Rule, all attorneys in Arizona must belong to the State Bar of Arizona. The Bar serves the public by regulating ethics and discipline among attorneys, as well as through other efforts to enhance the legal profession.

- Active - 15,840
- Inactive - 3,653
- Judicial - 501
- Over 70 - 1013
- Retired - 748
- In-House Counsel - 250
- Total - 22,005

The State Bar of Arizona is a non-profit organization that operates under the supervision of the Arizona Supreme Court. The Bar includes approximately 16,900 active attorneys and provides education and development programs for the legal profession and the public.
