Welcome to the
State Bar of Arizona Annual Convention

Message from the Convention Co-Chairs

Dear Fellow State Bar of Arizona Members:

On behalf of the State Bar of Arizona and its Convention Committee, we welcome you to the 2017 State Bar Convention. Here in Arizona, we have become accustomed to our annual Convention’s lineup of excellent education programs in a wide variety of practice areas as well as fun social events. This year is no exception. Held at Tucson’s beautiful and recently renovated Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa, the Bar Convention will offer great opportunities for learning, socializing, and engaging with old and new friends alike.

We chose this year’s theme, “Our Bar – Serving and Protecting the Public” for three reasons: first, to remind each bar member that he or she is an integral part of the State Bar, whose primary mission is to serve and protect the public; second, to confirm that, as lawyers in our respective practice fields, we recognize and strive to fulfill that mission through our daily work and commitment to access to justice and continuing education; and third, to preserve and enhance our mission by inviting each member to invest in the future of our State Bar as it faces challenges to its work and independence. Now is the time for each of us to get involved and take hold of our State Bar’s future so that, together, we may continue to serve and protect the public.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s admission to the Arizona bar. In a free plenary session, we will honor Justice O’Connor, learn how her Arizona heritage and varied work experiences in this state influenced her both on and off the bench, and hear from former law clerks about significant aspects of her jurisprudence. Another free plenary session features an in-depth, fascinating discussion of the Supreme Court’s In re Gault decision, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Attendees also will choose from more than 40 Continuing Legal Education courses on a wide range of interesting subjects, including a session on the timely topic “Fair Justice for All”; the latest developments in employment law, civil and criminal law, evidence, and other major practice areas; and the always popular Ethics Game Show.

For those of you who have never attended a Bar Convention or are new to the practice of law, this is a great opportunity to learn about different practice areas and spot issues for your clients through these educational seminars, while also having the opportunity to network with potential mentors and referral sources, buy some silent auction items to support a local charity, and enjoy numerous social events hosted by the State Bar and its sections and local bar associations. At this year’s luncheons, a local cartoonist will be drawing caricatures of our award winners and maybe even some audience members!

In planning the 2017 Convention, the Convention Committee has worked to deliver engaging, relevant, and practical seminars for all members of the State Bar. Whether you are new to the practice of law, a seasoned attorney, a solo practitioner, or a member of a large law firm, we have modeled this Convention with you in mind. The State Bar staff and the Convention Committee will be available to help ensure that you have a wonderful experience. We are excited for you to experience all the Convention has to offer and hope each of you leaves the Convention knowing that the State Bar of Arizona truly is “Our Bar – Serving and Protecting the Public.”

Sincerely, Hon. John Pelander May Lu Convention Co-Chairs
