State Bar of Arizona Names Diversity Director
PHOENIX – October 1, 2007 – The State Bar of Arizona is pleased to announce the hiring of I. Godwin Otu as its first Director of Diversity, effective October 15, 2007. The Bar created this new position in conjunction with its commitment to improve recruiting and retention of minorities. In May 2006, the Bar created a Diversity Task Force. In September 2007, it launched the Leadership Institute, a program aimed at increasing Bar and community involvement among minority attorneys.

Dan McAuliffe, president of the Bar's Board of Governors, says, "Otu's wealth of experience in diversity initiatives, as well as his contacts in the community, will enhance the programs of the Bar. He has impressed us with his deep commitment to diversity and the management skills he can bring to our organization."

Otu earned a bachelor's degree from Western Washington University and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Oregon. He holds a professional certificate in mediation and alternative dispute resolution.

Prior to joining the State Bar, Otu served with the City of Phoenix as staff liaison to the Human Relations Commission and was responsible for coordinating the We're All on the Same Team cultural diversity education and awareness program, along with the city's popular Faces of Diversity brown bag program.

Otu has an extensive background in diversity program development and management, conflict resolution, mediation and negotiation skills. In addition to his work for the City of Phoenix, Otu has worked on diversity programs in the community, and edits and publishes the quarterly Diversity Dialogue newsletter.
